Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) Eastbound Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) Westbound
This is the beginning of the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) eastbound in Secaucus.  This is just after passing through the toll booths of New Jersey Turnpike Eastern Spur (I-95) Exit 16E.  The left ramp leads to Paterson Plank Road (CR 681), while the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) bears right.  Note the old signage with the written-out "NJ 3" (as opposed to a NJ 3 shield), as well as the lack of an NJ 495 shield or sign on the mainline sign.  These signs are maintained by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and haven't been replaced for many, many years.  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the beginning of the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) westbound in Weehawken Township.  This is just after exiting the Lincoln Tunnel (NJ 495), and the depth of the tunnel portal can be seen by the high cliff on the right.  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) westbound at Exit 3(Boulevard East, Park Avenue, Hoboken, Weehawken, Union City) in Weehawken Township.  Here the roadway is climbing the 'helix'.  The helix removes the difficulty of lowering the freeway to the Lincoln Tunnel (NJ 495) portal by creating a long, circular roadway, greatly extending the distance available to descend.  Visible ahead is the Midtown Manhattan skyline, including the Empire State Building on the far right.  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) eastbound at Exit 1(NJ 3, US 1&9, Secaucus) in North Bergen Township.  The right ramp ahead heads to Tonelle Avenue (US 1&9) via the eastern end of the Secaucus Bypass (NJ 3).  Just ahead, obscured by the sun glare, is the only remaining I-495 signage.  Originally designated as NJ 3, the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) was then designated I-495 as part of a route from New Jersey through New York City (via the unbuilt Mid-Manhattan Expressway (I-495)) to Long Island.  After the Mid-Manhattan Expressway (I-495)  was cancelled, I-495 in New Jersey was redesignated as NJ 495.  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) westbound just west of Exit 3(Boulevard East, Park Avenue, Hoboken, Weehawken, Union City) in Weehawken Township.  Here the roadway is transitioning to the trench which it uses to cross the Palisades ridge.  The left lane is marked with double double lines because it is used as an Express Bus Lane during morning rush hours, so that traffic in that lane actually flows in the opposite direction.  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) eastbound at Exit 2(Kennedy Boulevard) in North Bergen Township.  Here the roadway transitions into the trench that it uses to cross the Palisades ridge.  The right ramp leads to 30th Street which serves as a service/frontage road for the freeway.  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) westbound east of Exit 2(Kennedy Boulevard) in Union City.  Note the "parkway style" stone-faced retaining walls.  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) eastbound east of Exit 2(Kennedy Boulevard) in Union City.  Here the roadway is in a rock trench that it uses to cross the Palisades ridge.  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) westbound at Exit 2(Kennedy Boulevard) in Union City.  The higher, modern overpass carries the mainline of JFK Boulevard West (CR 501), while the lower, older one is part of the traffic circle which originally formed the interchange between the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) and JFK Boulevard West (CR 501).  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) eastbound west of Exit 3(Weehawken, Hoboken, Ferries to NYC) in Union City.  The large, segmented overpass ahead is for 32nd Street (CR 691).  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) westbound just east of Exit 1(US 1&9, NJ 3, To Garden State Parkway, Ridgefield, Jersey City, Secaucus) in North Bergen Township.  Here the roadway leaves the trench it used to cross the Palisades ridge.  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) eastbound at Exit 3(Weehawken, Hoboken, Ferries to NYC) in Union City.  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) westbound at Exit 1(US 1&9, NJ 3, To Garden State Parkway, Ridgefield, Jersey City, Secaucus) in North Bergen Township.  The right ramp joins the Secaucus Bypass (NJ 3) while the mainline continues to the New Jersey Turnpike Eastern Spur (I-95).  Note that this is one of the few signs which actually includes an I-95 shield.  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) eastbound east of Exit 3(Weehawken, Hoboken, Ferries to NYC) in Weehawken Township.  The now-destroyed Twin Towers of the World Trade Center are visible on the left as the road descends the 'helix' to the Lincoln Tunnel portal.  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the end of the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) westbound in Secaucus.  The road merges with the southbound New Jersey Turnpike Eastern Spur (I-95) just ahead at the toll booth.  Filmed August 25, 2000.

This is the end of the Lincoln Tunnel Approach (NJ 495) eastbound in Weehawken Township.  The road continues into the Lincoln Tunnel (NJ 495) just beyond the toll plaza ahead.  Filmed August 25, 2000.
