Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) Northbound Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) Southbound
This is the beginning of the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) southbound at the North-South Freeway (NJ 42) in Deptford Township.  The roadway splitting towards the left is the North-South Freeway (NJ 42) southbound.  Originally planned to terminate at the Camden Freeway (I-295), the end of the expressway was realigned to connect to the North-South Freeway (NJ 42) instead in the belief that traffic would be better served by a new direct connection instead of by the already-poor connection between the Camden Freeway (I-295) and the North-South Freeway (I-76).  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the beginning of the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) northbound in Maurice River Township.  Here, the originally "temporary" Cape May Expressway-Delsea Drive Connector (NJ 55), an undivided 2-lane roadway, reaches the alignment of the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) and transitions into the expressway.  Originally planned to begin 20 miles further south near Wildwood at the Garden State Parkway (NJ 444), the southern section has been continually blocked by environmentalists due to the sensitive areas it is proposed to pass through.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) northbound south of Exit 24(NJ 49, Millville, Bridgeton) in Millville.  The unusually long grass in the median is not due to a lack of maintenance by the NJDOT; it is in fact a test grass.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) southbound just north of Exit 58(To CR 621, Deptford, Almonesson) in Deptford Township.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) southbound north of Exit 56(NJ 47, To NJ 41, Woodbury, Westville, Hurffville, Glassboro) in Deptford Township.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) northbound at Exit 29(CR 552, Bridgeton, South Vineland) in Vineland.  Note the lack of a control city on the "NORTH NJ 55" sign.  These signs date from the completion of this section in the early 1970's, and because the existing sections formed little more than a bypass of Vineland and Millville at that time, no control cities were listed.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) southbound north of Exit 50(US 322, Richwood, Mullica Hill, Glassboro) in Mantua Township.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) southbound just south of Exit 39(US 40, Elmer, Malaga) in Franklin Township.  This is the just after the beginning of the older (early 1970's) southern section which sports a 'test' grass in the median.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) northbound at Exit 39(US 40, Malaga, Elmer) in Franklin Township.  Note the control cities on the NJ 55 sign; this sign is newer than the signs for US 40.  The NJ 55 sign was placed in the late 1980's when the expressway was completed north of here, while the US 40 signs were placed in the early 1970's when this section was completed.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) southbound north of Exit 35(Garden Road, Brotmanville, North Vineland) in Vineland.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) northbound north of Exit 39(US 40, Malaga, Elmer) in Franklin Township.  In the newer (late 1980's) sections of the expressway such as here, the median was often left in its wooded state, while further south in the older (early 1970's) sections the median was completely cleared.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) southbound at Exit 29(CR 552, Bridgeton, South Vineland) in Vineland.  Note the lack of a control city on the NJ 55 sign.  This signage dates from this section's construction in the early 1970's, when the then-existing sections of the expressway were little more than a bypass of Millville and Vineland.  However, even today a control city for the southbound side is unnecessary, as the expressway remains incomplete to the south.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) northbound just south of Exit 50(US 322, Glassboro, Richwood, Mullica Hill) in Harrison Township.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) southbound at Exit 27(NJ 47, Vineland, Millville) in Millville.  From this point south the NJDOT has only installed LGS's (little green signs) in lieu of freeway-standard BGS's (big green signs) that appear further north.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) northbound north of Exit 50(US 322, Glassboro, Richwood, Mullica Hill) in Mantua Township.  The roadway here is depressed due to the proximity of two overpasses.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) southbound south of Exit 26(CR 555, Buena, Millville) in Millville.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the end of the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) southbound in Maurice River Township.  Here the road transitions from the divided 4-lane Cape May Expressway to the 2-lane undivided Cape May Expressway-Delsea Drive Connector as it leaves the expressway alignment and heads back towards Delsea Drive (NJ 47).  While the connector was originally planned to be temporary, due to environmental concerns over the route of the southern section of the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55), this 'temporary' roadway has remained in use for 30 years and will likely remain for a good while longer.  Filmed August 16, 2000.

This is the end of the Cape May Expressway (NJ 55) northbound at the North-South Freeway (NJ 42) in Deptford Township.  The North-South Freeway (NJ 42) is the road merging from the left.  Originally planned to link to the Camden Freeway (I-295), the expressways's northern terminus was realigned to connect directly with the North-South Freeway (NJ 42) to provide better access than the overburdened and underpowered Camden Freeway (I-295) ramps to the North-South Freeway (I-76) could offer.  Filmed August 21, 2000.
