As explained on the opening page of this website, the I-95 Eastern Route follows the Pennsylvania and New Jersey Turnpikes to the south and east of Trenton.  Until the I-95 gap is officially closed via the I-95/I-276 interchange, one must utilize dualized or soon-to-be dualized arterial routes in order to follow the Eastern Route:  Bristol Pike (US 13) and New Rodgers Road (PA 413).  This page documents the signage along that route.  To see the route itself in detail, please go to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Bridge (I-95 Eastern Route and I-276) and New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension (I-95 Eastern Route) pages, and the corresponding New Jersey Turnpike (I-95 and I-95 Eastern Route) page.  No photo pages are available on this site for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276), Bristol Pike (US 13), New Rodgers Road (PA 413), Delaware Expressway (I-95), Wilmington Expressway (I-95), or Delaware Turnpike (I-95).

I-95 Eastern Route Northbound I-95 Eastern Route Southbound
This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) southbound at Exit 10(I-287, NJ 440, Perth Amboy, Metuchen, Edison Township, Outerbridge Crossing) in Edison Township, New Jersey.  Starting in the mid-1960's, I-95 'ended' here.  While I-95 was officially designated along at least part of the Middlesex Freeway (I-287) until 1985, no signage indicating this was posted due to the unbuilt Somerset Freeway section.  After 1985, the New Jersey Turnpike was officially redesignated as I-95 south to the New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension, which also was designated as I-95 straight to the state line.  However, neither the New Jersey Department of Transportation nor the New Jersey Turnpike Authority posted any indication of this until 1997, when new shields like the one on the lower left gantry support were posted between Exit 10 and Exit 6.  Thus, until 1997 this was the end of I-95 as far as was publically known.  Photo taken January 10, 2002.

This signage is at the end of the Delaware Turnpike (I-95) northbound in New Castle, Delaware.  Here, the I-95 Gap Eastern Bypass splits to the right following Ocean Highway (I-295), while I-95 continues north to the left as the Wilmington Expressway.  Note that Ocean Highway (I-295) is also signed as "New Jersey Turnpike / New Jersey / New York" in a strong attempt to draw long-distance travellers away from the incomplete I-95.  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the Delaware Expressway (I-95) northbound at Exit 35(West PA 63, US 13, Woodhaven Road, Bristol Park) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  This is the last I-95 shield assembly on the Delaware Expressway (I-95) northbound before the I-95 Eastern Route leaves the official I-95 via New Rodgers Road (PA 413).  Note that one of the bolts has come loose from the directional plate.  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) southbound at Exit 10(I-287, NJ 440, Perth Amboy, Metuchen, Edison Township, Outerbridge Crossing) in Edison Township, New Jersey.  This is a close-up of the I-95 shield on the lower left gantry support in the above photo.  Of the new I-95 shields, this is the only one with any directional banner.  Note the unusual font for the numbers, used only for the I-95 shields that were posted in 1997.  Photo taken January 10, 2002.

This signage is on the Delaware Expressway (I-95) northbound south of Exit 40(PA 413, I-276, Pennsylvania Turnpike, Bristol, Burlington Bristol Bridge) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  It is the first signage for New Rodgers Road (PA 413), where the I-95 Eastern Route splits away from I-95 proper (which becomes the I-95 Western Route).  Note the "Old Exit 26" sign on the right, a halmark of Pennsylvania's recent conversion from sequential exit numbering to mileage-based exit numbering.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) southbound at Exit 9(NJ 18, US 1, New Brunswick, East Brunswick, Shore Resorts, Rutgers University) in New Brunswick, New Jersey.  The I-95 Gap Western Bypass leaves I-95 here and follows the Old Bridge-New Brunswick Turnpike (NJ 18) to the New Brunswick-Metuchen Bypass (US 1).  Photo taken January 10, 2002.

This signage is on the Delaware Expressway (I-95) northbound just south of Exit 40(PA 413, I-276, Pennsylvania Turnpike, Bristol, Burlington Bristol Bridge) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  Exit 40 is also signed as "To I-276/Pennsylvania Turnpike" because of the current lack of a direct interchange.  Strangely, while only Exit 40 is signed this way heading north, both Exit 46 (US 1) and Exit 40 are signed this way heading south.  Also note the white-on-green Pennsylvania Turnpike trailblazer, unusual for a sign made by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (which usually makes them black-on-white).  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) southbound south of Exit 9(NJ 18, US 1, New Brunswick, East Brunswick, Shore Resorts, Rutgers University) in East Brunswick Township, New Jersey.  This is the last I-95 shield posted on I-95 southbound.  Strangely, while the new I-95 shields posted in 1997 were posted all the way from Exit 6 to Exit 10 on the northbound side, the southbound side was only posted from Exit 10 to just south of Exit 9.  Note that this sign sports the 1997 font used for I-95 shields on the turnpike.  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the Delaware Expressway (I-95) northbound at Exit 40(PA 413, I-276, Pennsylvania Turnpike, Bristol, Burlington Bristol Bridge) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  Here, the I-95 Eastern Route exits to New Rodgers Road (PA 413) towards the right via a stub of the Delaware Expressway, while the separated I-95 Western Route follows the Scudders Falls Expressway north to the left.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) southbound at Exit 7A(I-195, Trenton, Hamilton, Shore Points) in Washington Township, New Jersey.  The I-95 Western Route exits here and follows the Central Jersey Expressway (I-195).  Note that no indication is made that a connection to I-95 southbound is available via this exit.  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the Delaware Expressway stub northbound just north of Exit 40(PA 413, I-276, Pennsylvania Turnpike, Bristol, Burlington Bristol Bridge) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  In contrast with the photo above, this sign has the typical black-on-white Pennsylvania Turnpike trailblazer as it directs traffic to New Rodgers Road (PA 413) southbound for the connection to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276).  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) southbound just south of Exit 7(US 206, Bordentown, Trenton) in Mansfield Township, New Jersey.  The "To" banner is a proper indication by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority that the New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension (I-95) is not part of I-276, despite erroneous maps which show otherwise.  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the Delaware Expressway stub northbound north of Exit 40(PA 413, I-276, Pennsylvania Turnpike, Bristol, Burlington Bristol Bridge) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  The end of the stub is just ahead.  The I-95 Eastern Route follows New Rodgers Road (PA 413) south towards the right.  The illegible yellow diamond on the right says "Expressway Ends", in reference to this being a stub of the Delaware Expressway.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) southbound south of Exit 7(US 206, Bordentown, Trenton) in Mansfield Township, New Jersey.  The "To" banner again properly indicates the lack of the I-276 designation on the New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension (I-95).  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) southbound just north of Exit 6(US 130, I-276, Pennsylvania Turnpike, Florence) in Mansfield Township, New Jersey.  Unlike the shield assemblies, the large sign here incorrectly refers to the New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension (I-95) as I-276.  This sign is new and was posted in 2000 when the fully directional Exit 6A was opened connecting to Burlington-Bordentown Road (US 130).  The previous signs only referred to the Pennsylvania Turnpike and properly did not sign any route numbers.  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is at the end of the Delaware Expressway stub northbound at New Rodgers Road (PA 413) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  The I-95 Eastern Route follows New Rodgers Road (PA 413) south towards the right, following the signage towards the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276).  The black-on-white Pennsylvania Turnpike trailblazer here is typical of free-standing ones installed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on New Rodgers Road (PA 413) southbound at the Bristol Pike (US 13) in Bristol Boro, Pennsylvania.  The I-95 Eastern Route follows the Bristol Pike (US 13) north towards the left.  These signs were temporary construction signs due to the dualization of New Rodgers Road (PA 413) at the time.  The construction likely contributed to the erroneous PA 13 shields displayed here (instead of US 13 shields), and to the lack of any signage directing one towards the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276).  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) southbound at Exit 6(US 130, I-276, Pennsylvania Turnpike, Florence) in Mansfield Township, New Jersey.  I-95 (and the I-95 Eastern Route) exits here to the right following the New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension (I-95) to Pennsylvania.  The I-95 Gap Eastern Bypass continues south to the left along the southern section of the New Jersey Turnpike (NJ 700).  Note that unlike the previous sign, these signs have not been replaced recently.  In fact, they have stood since the New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension (I-95) opened as NJ 700P in 1956.  They may finally be replaced when the I-95/I-276 Interchange Project in Pennsylvania is completed, which would necessitate the posting of "I-95 SOUTH" on the right sign here.  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the Bristol Pike (US 13) northbound in Bristol Boro, Pennsylvania.  These white-on-green Pennsylvania Turnpike trailblazers are posted by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, as opposed to the black-on-white shields posted by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.  In an interestingly rare act of coordination, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation also decided to add a "To I-276" assembly later on.  Unfortunately, the I-276 shield that was once here was either stolen or fell off.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension (I-95) southbound just south of Exit 6(New Jersey Turnpike South, Camden, Delaware) in Mansfield Township, New Jersey.  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the Bristol Pike (US 13) northbound at the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  The I-95 Eastern Route leaves the Bristol Pike (US 13) here and joins the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276).  The signage here is apparently standard at non-freeway Pennsylvania Turnpike entrances.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension (I-95) southbound at Exit 6A(US 130, Burlington, Florence, Bordentown) in Florence Township, New Jersey.  The reference to the distance of the Pennsylvania Turnpike is interesting; most signs of that format instead have a "Next Exit x Miles" message.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension (I-95) southbound south of Exit 6A(US 130, Burlington, Florence, Bordentown) in Florence Township, New Jersey.  This is the final "To I-276" assembly, as this is just north of the Delaware River bridge approach, which becomes I-276 upon crossing the state line.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is just past the toll plaza on the Bristol Pike (US 13) ramp to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  Note that no reference to the New Jersey Turnpike or I-95 exists on the signage heading to New Jersey.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is at the split in the Bristol Pike (US 13) ramp to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  The I-95 Eastern Route follows the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276) east to the right.  Again note no reference to the New Jersey Turnpike or to I-95 on signage for I-276 east.  Also note that the old exit numbers for the turnpike are still used as reference locations; like the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission recently changed its exit numbering from sequential to mileage-based, though to more of a dual (both numbers) system exists at first.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Bridge (I-276 and I-95) southbound / westbound in Burlington Township, New Jersey and Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  The New Jersey Department of Transportation and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority both consider this the official terminus of I-95 southbound.  However, only the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission considers it as the terminus of I-276; the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation considers I-276 to end at the Scudders Falls Expressway (I-95) intersection.  However, this is still significant as the beginning of the current I-95 gap along I-95 southbound.  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Bridge (I-276 and I-95) eastbound / northbound in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania and Burlington Township, New Jersey.  The state line is where I-276 ends according to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, I-276 ends at the Scudders Falls Expressway (I-95) intersection).  The I-95 Eastern Route joins the official I-95 here, as according to both the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, I-95 extends south and west to the state line.  This is therefore the second beginning of I-95 (the first being in Miami, Florida).  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276) westbound just east of Exit 358(US 13, Levittown, Bristol) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  Note the standard white-on-green Pennsylvania Turnpike trailblazer used by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission here.  Generally, the trailblazer does not appear on the mainline roadway itself, but as this is the eastern terminus of the Pennsylvania Turnpike system, it is posted here nonetheless.  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276) westbound at Exit 358(US 13, Levittown, Bristol) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  The I-95 Eastern Route leaves the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276) and joins the Bristol Pike (US 13) here.  The dual numbering is due to the Pennsylvania Turnpike's recent conversion from sequential to mileage-based exit numbering.  As can be viewed by the much smaller numerals in the new number tab, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has done a poor job preparing drivers for the numbering switch.  Note that there is no reference on the turnpike mainline that the Bristol Pike (US 13) also leads to the Delaware Expressway (I-95).  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension (I-95) northbound south of Exit 6A (US 130, Burlington, Florence, Bordentown) in Florence Township, New Jersey.  This sign appears at the mainline New Jersey Turnpike's (NJ 700's and I-95's) termini, and here at the terminus of the New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension (I-95), but not along the New Jersey Turnpike Newark Bay Extension (I-78).  Note that this picture was taken slightly before Governor McGreevey was sworn-in as governor.  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension (I-95) northbound south of Exit 6(New Jersey Turnpike South, Camden) in Mansfield Township, New Jersey.  These signs are still lacking "I-95 North" markers.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276) Exit 358 ramp to the Bristol Pike (US 13) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276) Exit 358 ramp to the Bristol Pike (US 13) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  Note that while no "To I-95" is mentioned on the mainline for Exit 358, it is prominently signed once past the toll plaza.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is at the end of the New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension (I-95) northbound at Exit 6(New Jersey Turnpike South, Camden) in Mansfield Township, New Jersey.  I-95 (and the I-95 Eastern Route) follows the left ramp to the northbound New Jersey Turnpike mainline.  Note again that this signage still lacks "I-95 North" shields.  This signage dates from the New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension's (I-95's) opening as NJ 700P in 1956, and will most likely remain at least until the I-95/I-276 Interchange Project is completed in Pennsylvania.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is at the split of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Delaware River Extension (I-276) Exit 358 ramp to the Bristol Pike (US 13) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  The I-95 Eastern Route follows the Bristol Pike (US 13) south to the right.  Once again, I-95 is prominently signed here.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) northbound south of Exit 7(US 206, Bordentown, Trenton, McGuire Air Force Base, Fort Dix) in Mansfield Township, New Jersey.  This is the first I-95 shield posted on the I-95 Eastern Route northbound in New Jersey.   Note the strange font used for the numerals; all such signs were installed in 1997 when the New Jersey Turnpike signed I-95 along the mainline from Exit 10 to Exit 6.  The I-95 Gap Eastern Bypass also rejoins I-95 at Exit 6 via the southern section of the New Jersey Turnpike (NJ 700).  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the Bristol Pike (US 13) southbound in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  It again is an example of I-95's prominent signing along the Bristol Pike (US 13) as part of the I-95 Eastern Route.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) northbound north of Exit 7A(I-195, Trenton, Hamilton, Shore Points) in Washington Township, New Jersey.  It is the first I-95 shield posted on the combined (Eastern and Western Routes) I-95 northbound in New Jersey.  The I-95 Western Route joins the I-95 Eastern Route from the Central Jersey Expressway (I-195) at Exit 7A.  Note that this shield is also of the unusual 1997 font series.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the Bristol Pike (US 13) southbound just north of New Rodgers Road (PA 413) in Bristol Boro, Pennsylvania.  This is more prominent signage of I-95.  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) northbound north of Exit 9(NJ 18, US 1, New Brunswick, East Brunswick, Rutgers University) in New Brunswick, New Jersey.  It is the first I-95 shield posted on I-95 after the I-95 Gap Western Bypass joins I-95 at Exit 9.  Again note it is of the unusual 1997 font style.  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the Bristol Pike (US 13) southbound at New Rodgers Road (PA 413) in Bristol Boro, Pennsylvania.  The I-95 Eastern Route follows New Rodgers Road (PA 413) north to the right.  Note that this yet again continues the pattern of I-95's prominent signing along the Bristol Pike (US 13).  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) northbound just north of Exit 10(I-287, NJ 440, Perth Amboy, Metuchen, Edison Township, Outerbridge Crossing) in Edison Township, New Jersey.  Starting in the mid-1960's, the I-95 gap began at Exit 10.  This was because I-95 was never posted (although it was designated) along the Middlesex Freeway (I-287), and I-95 had not yet been extended south along the turnpike.  Although official records indicate that I-95 was redesignated along the New Jersey Turnpike and New Jersey Turnpike Pennsylvania Extension in 1985, no indication of this redesignation appeared until 1997, further perpetuating the "I-95 ends at Exit 10" story.   Because of this, until 1997 this I-95 shield represented 'the end of the gap'.  Note that this shield is of a different numerical font than the previous shields, owing to its greater age.  Photo taken January 10, 2002.

This signage is on New Rodgers Road (PA 413) northbound at the Delaware Expressway stub in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  The I-95 Eastern Route follows the Delaware Expressway stub to the official I-95 (and I-95 Western Route) towards the left.  Note the non-cutout I-95 shield on the right, most likely posted due to the construction visible in the background.  This construction involves the dualization of New Rodgers Road (PA 413).  Photo taken December 30, 2001.

This signage is on the Delaware Expressway stub southbound at the Scudders Falls Expressway (I-95) in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania.  The I-95 Eastern Route rejoins the official I-95 and the I-95 Western Route here and continues south as the Delaware Expressway (I-95) to the left.  Note the extra green space on the left sign for I-95 south.  It appears that another word was written and later 'greened out'.  As the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation usually uses "Central Phila" at other locations along the Scudders Falls and Delaware Expressways (I-95) north of Philadelphia, it is likely that the sign once said "Central" above "Philadelphia".  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the Delaware Expressway (I-95) southbound just south of Exit 32(Academy Road) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  This is the first I-95 shield assembly after the I-95 Eastern Route rejoins I-95 from New Rodgers Road (PA 413).  Photo taken January 15, 2002.

This signage is on the Delaware Turnpike (I-95) southbound just north of Exit 3(DE 273, Newark, Dover) in New Castle, Delaware.  This is the first I-95 shield assembly after the I-95 Gap Eastern Bypass rejoins I-95 from Ocean Highway (I-295).  Photo taken January 15, 2002.
